Not quite so hot right now: Zoolander No.2 Review

Fifteen years after we first encountered “model idiot” Derek Zoolander, we are subjected to a sequel that really doesn’t live up to the original film’s playful simplicity.

Zoolander, played by a really, really, ridiculously boring Ben Stiller, along with fellow male model Hansel (Owen Wilson) travels to Italy in search of his estranged son. When Interpol: fashion division agent Valentina Valencia (Penélope Cruz) enlists Zoolander to help solve the selfie murders of several pop stars, the duo find themselves facing their old nemesis Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell).

This film falls far short of its highly quotable and highly memorable predecessor but has a far greater problem than being forgettable: it’s just not funny.

There are brief moments when Zoolander and Hansel revive some of their vocabulary-less conversations, but most of the film falls flat, with slapstick gags very unlike the Zoolander of old.

The film feels massively over-produced, and is riddled with multiple cameos that don’t add anything to the film other than run-time. The appearance of Sting attempts to mirror the role of David Bowie in the original film, but feels unnatural and dated, rather than nostalgic.

The big miss from the start was Will Ferrell as Mugatu. He was the stand-out performance, and the film suffers from introducing him late-on, nearly an hour into the 1hr 42min run time.

Overall, this not so hot right now feature was poles apart from the original Zoolander and, I think, has to be Derek’s last saunter down the catwalk.
